India has become the major supplier of stone slabs to Chinas booming construction industry, which is thriving as a result of high growth in real estate and other sectors.
The import and export volume of stone slabs amounted to over $3.7 billion last year, a growth of 23.3 per cent from the previous year, the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemicals Importers and Exporters said.
The rise is attributed to countrys abundant stone resources and the fast-growing real estate sector. Xiamen Port in east Chinas Fujian Province handled 9.3 million tonnes of stone slab imports and exports, valued at $2.3 billion, more than 60 per cent of the countrys total, Xinhua news agency quoted the chamber of commerce as saying. The exports stood at $1.67 billion and imports at $630 million.
